How did soldiers and other combatents get on in the field of battle during the early wars.?

Nowadays we have contact lenses and glasses, but in the 1600,1700's I guess they didn't or at least they weren't available to the ordinary squaddie. Also, would it not be construed as trying to wriggle out of battle
